Trevor has lived on the ice shelf his entire life. Antarctica is his vast, open-air home. He is well-accustomed to extreme living conditions. During the winter, temperatures can drop as low as -60\u00b0C, with winds exceeding 200 km\/h. Absolutely wild!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Trevor has just turned 6; it is high time for him to find a soulmate and reproduce. The survival of his species depends on it. At least, that\u2019s what his mother has always told him. She must surely be right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is March\u2014the very beginning of the austral winter\u2014and the entire colony, or at least the adults, sets off on a long trek toward nesting grounds identified by the elders. He begins his own journey inland, covering nearly 120 km to reach the favored site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He practiced his mating display in secret; he didn\u2019t want to look ridiculous when the moment finally arrived. On his own, he learned how to stand perfectly still, tuck his head against his chest, and take a deep breath before letting out a worthy call. Now, he must put his training into practice in front of the entire colony, alongside all the other males in search of happiness. Fortunately, the call lasts only a second or two\u2014Trevor doesn\u2019t have much breath to spare, and it is bitterly cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wanders here and there, when suddenly he finds himself face-to-face with a female who waddles up and stretches out her head and neck, moving in rhythm with him. A pair is formed. Trevor is over the moon. An egg is laid! She moves delicately toward him to entrust it to his care, placing it between his feet to keep it warm and snug. He must, at all costs, prevent it from coming into contact with the ice. While his chosen mate heads off to feed, he will keep a careful watch over his future little one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What an adventure. He wasn\u2019t prepared for this, and yet he has never experienced such a sense of ecstasy. He can\u2019t wait to meet his little one\u2014to feel him, protect him, and keep him warm. He also looks forward to reuniting with his beloved and sharing these moments with her.

No, he doesn\u2019t feel alone. All the males in the colony are with him, and some days, they have such a good laugh together. There\u2019s always someone there to keep the others entertained!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
