Oil on canvas – 11,81 x 11,81 inch – Unique work
Lying on the hot sand, I feel so small.
On the beach at Merlimont, after a good swim in a 17° sea as the tide falls, and yet how good it was, I was able to play with the waves, closely watched by lifeguards. It’s reassuring even though, and don’t laugh, I had plenty of foothold, the water came up to my waist. But can’t we drown in a glass of water ?!
And then I had to leave this giant bathtub and with my friend go up all this still wet sand, then the small indoor pools, quickly invaded by children armed with shovels and rakes. They invent better … or worse lives. They build temporary castles, dig holes, future wells with the rising tide. And it chats, and it argues, and it lives.
I leave this environment to throw myself on my candy pink towel, and dry my swimsuit. With the protective cream ritual complete, I open my Annie Darling book The Little Bookshop of Lonely Hearts, page 313, my daughter’s Christmas present, all four novels, and this is the first one. A feel-good funny romance that I really like at this time of year, or around Christmas too, it works! Sitting on my towel, lying down, I enjoy my book.
And then suddenly, without knowing where it came from or rather I perfectly know where it came from, from up there, far away. This mysterious star so much wanted in the summer. I’m talking about the sun. The latter began to heat up, but really heat up. Lying on my back then, my cheeks were like burning torches. An intense heat comforting but, when it stops between two clouds, feels better.
With my eyelids closed, I could feel this incredible, phenomenal, disturbing but addictive burning. How good it felt. The sun, however, so far away. It’s like it’s right next to me. My best friend without a doubt. Although my skin is not so sure … And then the clouds took it away. The rain …
