They’re all there, gathered on the hot sand. Some standing, others sitting. They remember the good times of Maximilian’s life. His childhood, gilded in the old manor house in the family for generations. The eldest of four sisters and three brothers. His parents, wealthy aristocrats, spoiled their children till their last breath. The girls married wealthy men. The brothers entered the army. Maximilian preferred the religious orders. His attraction to religion began during his first communion. A magnificent ceremony with breathtaking choirs. When he went to bed that day, he had told his father his final decision.
The learning had been tedious. Maximilian wasn’t too keen on readings, he’d rather pray, on his own, in a corner of the church, far from all agitation, near the light of candles and stained glass windows. His first Mass was moving, touching, sincere. He had put all his soul and beyond. His family, his friends, his acquaintances had pushed for being there. And they are all here today, as well. A common affection, admiration, and complicity bring them together, ostensibly.
The grey sky became clear blue out of the blue. As if a heavenly presence … The sun dazzles half the audience. The young woman in the red dress is sparkling. Yes, Maximilian, in his last wishes, had insisted that black be banished at his burial. He wished more than anything to be celebrated in happiness and joy. The women have, therefore, showed ingenuity to put on their most shining dresses of their wardrobe. As for men, the choice was white shirts and costumes in taupe tones. Even the dog Jules was among everyone and had a chat with each guest.
The sunshades opened are like a protection against the heavens’ raw clarity. The angels radiate the crowd with their caring. Maximilian didn’t find anything better to communicate with his family, all his family, no exception. After a fulfilled lifetime, a well earned rest.
Another last farewell before flying away for eternity and flirting with the illustrious spirits who preceded him in the ultimate ascent. Only a few minutes before the lights go out. Only a few more minutes to show amazing places. Only a few …
