Sarah and Quentin will meet at the end of school day on a Friday, just after class. They don’t attend the same high school, so they go to the meeting point on a bike, right at the corner of the main street. Today’s the big day. Sarah is eighteen years old. When all things seem possible. Quentin has to wait three more months. But he’s not in a hurry. He already feels so free in his head, in his movements, in his life in general.Sarah is late, as usual. Childhood friends, since their first day in nursery school. Sarah had not manage to deal with leaving her mother. So Quentin had approached her gently to give her a big, slobbery kiss, that only the children have the secret, on her salty cheek. Their eyes had crossed to never leave each other again.
The beginning of the autumn is deadly cruel, Sarah has cold hands and feet. she pedals as fast as she possibly can to warm up. Quentin catches up to guide her, they are almost there.
The old house offers a freaky view. To cheer themselves up, the two teenagers swallow a shot of Jägermeister. Quentin takes out his knife to cut the nettles in front of the doorstep. After several shoulder pushes, the front door gives up with a deafening noise and a cloud of stifling dust. It’s so dark inside. Sarah takes out her pocket torch and goes looking for a window to open in order to chase that musty smell making her heart heave. Quentin holds her back by the arm. The floor is not safe, it cracks, looking as if it could break, she should be more careful. Moving forward in the dark, Quentin knocks his head on the corner of a shelf. The few things, still standing on the piece of wood, slump a few meters below. A half empty bottle breaks into thousand pieces on the ground pouring a greenish, stinky liquid and throwing glass fragments. Sarah joins her friend and twists her ankle in a gap on her way. All this blood on his hands … Quentin doesn’t get it. Sarah even less. She feels a warm breath on her neck. Her friend stares at something over her shoulder. She can see the fear in his eyes. And then it’s over.
