Aiden doesn’t even need to set an alarm anymore. It’s as if her body knew, waited.
It’s still dark, dawn still hides until the very end, until it has no choice. Besides, did it ever really have a choice? Aiden stretches one last time before getting up. She loves nothing more than taking a lukewarm shower, as she calls it, to start the day off right.
As the water gently massages her shoulders, she closes her eyes and begins to dream.
She’s on a fine sandy beach, stretched out on an incredibly comfortable deckchair with its huge cushion, in the shade of an even bigger parasol. On the small side table right next to it, within easy reach, is a scarlet red rum-based cocktail. Her favorite strong drink. Her sunglasses protect her Wedgewood porcelain-blue eyes and allow her to discreetly observe her surroundings. Seeing without being seen—quite a concept, her favorite game when she’s on vacation. A few days off would do her good…
It’s time to go back to reality, to her reality. Seconds, minutes slip away like water in the shower and never return. She hurries out and dries herself quickly before slipping into her cozy terrycloth bathrobe.
She rushes into the kitchen to make herself a strong black coffee. She needs it, she can feel it. Uncertainty is creeping in imperceptibly. She knows herself inside and out. Waiting has never been her strong suit. Waiting leaves the field wide open, in its entirety, to the devastating negative thoughts that have haunted her since early childhood. Or at least for as long as she can remember. And why should her life be awesome?
Aiden was at this stage of her thoughts, her wanderings, when her phone biped. Hey, a new message? Is it…? But no! Of course not…
So, cup in hand, she heads to her daily observation post. The balcony! This enclosed space, an integral part of her apartment, which she has furnished like a boudoir with her IKEA Poang armchair and her small ambient light. It’s where she reads, writes, reflects… and waits!
