Announcement of the Birth of Jesus: “The Annunciation”
In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God into a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, from the house of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary. And, entering her house, he said: « Salutation, thou filled with grace! The Lord is with you. » Having heard she was troubled, and she wondered what this greeting might be about. And the angel said to her, « Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace with God. And you shall conceive and give birth to a son, and you shall call him by the name of Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever and ever, and his kingdom shall have no end. »Mary said to the angel, « How shall this be, since I know no man? » And answering, the angel said to her : « The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will take you under his shadow; and therefore the holy being that will be born will be called the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, thy relative, hath also conceived a son in her old age, and she is in her sixth month, which was called the barren; because nothing is impossible on God’s part. Mary said, “I am the slave of the Lord; let it be according to thy word. »
And the angel left her.
Mary visits Elizabeth
The meeting or “Visitation”
In those days, Mary left and hurried to the mountainous region, to a city of Judah. And she went in to Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greetings, the child leaped into her belly, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; and she cried out, and said : « Blessed art thou among the women, and blessed the fruit of thy womb ! And whence is it given me that the mother of my Lord may come unto me? For, see, as soon as the voice of your greeting has reached my ears, the child jumped in my belly. And blessed is she who believed in the fulfillment of what was said to her from the Lord. »
