Inspired by Le Greco (1541-1614) – St Mary Magdalene penitent (1576-1577) – Oil on canvas – 24 x 18 inch
What if behind all this agitation, all this aerial tumult, all this meteorological disorder, there was a world elsewhere?
Madeleine, lost in her dreams, wonders. Could it be vanity and nothing more? The time that tirelessly elapses. Inevitable mortality? Knowledge fading away? A deepest fear that grows and takes over the soul like an incurable disease. Perched on her rock, strong with an indestructible personality, the young woman dares not believe in the worst torment.
Suddenly, an appearance. Like a furtive and dazzling flash, the specter lingers near Madeleine for a few moments. Almost inaudible whispers, secrets to share, truths to know. Surprised, worried, curious, greedy, she cannot bring herself to erase this souvenir. Did it really happen? Or was it a dream? A thought that is definitely on her mind?
Suddenly, a bright blue breakthrough in the sky. Among the threatening grey and the resting white, this welcoming opening challenges Madeleine. She sees it as an invitation to travel, as a mystical hope. A “why not” of modern times?
She begins to imagine green meadows in which she finds herself running madly among the tall grass, soaked by the morning dew. There, she meets fantastic animals who don’t seem to be afraid at all. They approach imperceptibly, so close she can touch them and let her fingers wander in their soft fur. She also looks at flowers with bewitching scents, with bright and unknown colors. Further on, towards the horizon, is the sea. As blue as tumultuous, as serene as dangerous. She goes down a steep path to reach it. On her way, she meets smiling and gentle women, playful and carefree children, hurried and respectful men. A halo of light surrounds them, perhaps protecting them too. So many questions worries Madeleine. The sand burns her fragile little feet. She quickly reaches the salty water. She immerses herself entirely almost drowning. Wash your sins? Reborn from your past? Swim?
Suddenly, a dreadful noise draws Madeleine attention. She opens her eyes, looks up to the heavens, protects her heart…
