– You know what Juliet, when I turn 18, I leave high school to participate in the Vendée Globe.
– What’s the Vendée Globe?– It’s a sailing race around the world called “Everest of the Seas”. It’s a non-stop solo round the world voyage without assistance from Les Sables d’Olonne, taking the three great mythical caps: Cape of Good Hope south of South Africa, Cape Leeuwin in southern Australia and the famous Cape Horn at the tip of South America. The race crosses the South Atlantic and North Atlantic oceans before touring the Antarctic continent, crossing the Indian Ocean and then the Pacific Ocean. It happens every 4 years. And the next start is in 6 months, 3 weeks after my birthday. Perfect timing.
– I confirm, never heard of it. But which boat do you plan to leave with? Did you practice at least? Well, I guess it can’t be improvised.
– Everything is under control. Let me explain. My uncle produces ships at Les Sables d’Olonne, precisely. Ever since I was a kid, we have been together sailing the boats coming out of the workshop. He has been working on a prototype for about ten years. The ship must be 59.97 feet long and can reach a speed of more than 30 knots. A monster of the seas.
– But your uncle doesn’t want to run the race himself?
– Yes, of course. In fact, it was the original project. And then there was his stroke. And even though he has been doing well for 3 years, he doesn’t wish to run the risk and places all his hopes in me. I’ve been following a very specific sports program ever since and all the school holidays have been dedicated to sailing. Titouan Lamazou is one of his friends, he gives me tips.
– But what about your parents?
– They know nothing about it.
– And they don’t suspect anything?
– I don’t think so. Anyhow, they don’t show anything.
– Are you going to warn them at least?
– Don’t worry. I’ll leave a letter.
– I’ll be worried. I’m already worried about you, Romeo …
– We’ll meet again. Promise!
